Entire 358th INFANTRY/90th DIVISION moved to Fort Dix NJ & then Camp Kilmer NJ

Entire 358th INFANTRY/90th DIVISION took train ride from NJ to NY Port of Embarkation

Loading of  SHIP for 2 days; ship embarked but engine trouble 100 miles out so returned to port for repairs

27 Mar 1944

SHIP embarked 2nd time; 15-day journey to England; most of the troops were seasick

Docked at Liverpool England Apr 9th; Apr 10th all disembarked and went by train to SE Wales; set up Camp Llanmartin & began intensive training programs

Entire camp under RESTRICTED SECURITY; divided into boat groups; preparation for landing

due to weather, heavy rains, and swollen river, assault moved to Nov 9; last minute preparations and reconnaisance

DAY 1 of ASAULT on FORT KOENIGSMACHER; heavy mortar fire and casualties

DAY 2 of ASAULT on FORT KOENIGSMACHER by Company A, B, C, 358th Infantry; blasted way into bunkers and tunnels; heavy enemy counterattacks; worse mortar fire on Day 2

11 Nov 1944

DAY 3 of ASAULT on FORT KOENIGSMACHER; all-out devastating assault on Fort spearheaded by Company A

All-out devastating assault on Fort spearheaded by Company A. Arthur (2nd in command) took over company when his Company A squad leader was hit; US Casualties: 21 killed, 85 wounded, 5 missing; Arthur WOUNDED; medic tried to reach him but was hit; given first aid by member of his squad; Arthur taken to battalion aid station

Nov 1944-Mar 1945

Arthur's hospitalization & 2nd Casualty in Battle;
recuperation at 162nd General Hospital, England; penicillin treatment;  after months of hospitalization, Arthur placed on limited duty
